2 Commando Liaison Officer - Biography - Louis Thackwray: 1966 - 2009
Enlisted 1RLI - July 1966, served with 1 Commando, until June 1972, then
posted to the School of Infantry - Regimental Wing, rank of Sgt. after
having successfully completing the following courses:
- Squad Drill and Section Weapons Instructors (8 weeks)
- Physical Training Instructors (13 weeks)
- Platoon Weapons Instructors (9 weeks)
- 60 and 81mm Mortar Numbers Course (10 days)
- 60 and 81mm Mortar Instructors Course (10 weeks)
- Ceremonial Drill Instructors Course (7 weeks)
Promoted to WOII in August 1977 and posted as CSM 2 Commando 1RLI.
Attended basic parachute jump course in Bloemfontein RSA in November 1977
and parachute dispatchers course at New Serum in January 1978.
Served as CSM 2 Commando until 1979, then CSM Base Group until end of my
contract in August 1980.
Relocated to RSA, to take up an offer as an Instructor with Escom. Served
from 1980 to 1995. Held positions as: Senior Instructor; Head of the Escom
Security Training College; Manger - Change Management and Security Manager.
Resigned from Escom (voluntary separation package), end of 1995 and set up
my own security consulting business. Contracts included:
- Escom training and assessing - Durban and OFS
- Engen Refinery - Chief Security Officer/Training Consultant - Durban
- MineTec Zimbabwe - Logistics Officer for demining in Mozambique (Lionel Dyke)
- Security Training - Group 4, Uganda (Ian Bates)
- Security Instructor/Assessor - Escom, Koeberg - Cape Town.
Worked as Operations manager for Calvert Removals/Crown Relocations Cape
Town, from 2000 to 2005
From 2005 to present - Manager, holiday/residential complex in Cape Town
and now Ballito KZN.
