Born in Cape Town in 1953 Mark schooled at Rondebosch Boys School. He matriculated in 1971 and represented Western Province at Craven Week schools rugby. Called up for national service in 1972 Mark qualified as a Physical Training Instructor. Through an agreement between the Rhodesian and South African governments at the time Mark, along with a number of others, was recruited into the RLI. Mark was Best Recruit on Course 48 in Training Troop and was thereafter posted to 2 Commando.
Mark passed the Officer Selection Board and spent 1974 on officer training and was, on commissioning, posted to 3 Commando. Served as Troop Commander 12 Troop 1975/8 before being posted to the School of Infantry
At the School of Infantry Mark completed a Combat Team Commander's course.
Mark was thereafter attached as course officer for a National Service cadet course and was also the course officer for the regular Cadet course of 1979.
In 1980 he was posted to HQ 3 Brigade as GSO3 (Ops) where he saw out the transition before resigning and returning to South Africa.
Mark owns and runs his own security business based in Durban, KZN.
