Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape including
Namaqualand (David Fleminger) is the 8th pocket guide in our
World Heritage Sites Series, including information on the
Richtersveld National Park, Community Conservancy and the
coastal and inland towns that surround this desperately
beautiful part of South Africa. Also with information on

things to do and, most importantly, when to visit!

guide book to detail the western, southern and eastern
coastal whale trails of South Africa. It includes everything

when to visit, where to stay and what else to do in and
around South Africa’s whale-watching hop spots!

Manzovo-Place of the Elephants (Gary Albyn and Craig Bone)
is an exquisite 107-verse poem. Nestled like a rare jewel in
the inhospitable but alluring Zambezi Valley, Mana Pools
provides the early setting for this episodic story. The
story portrays the epic travels of a herd of elephants
through Mana Pools, Kariba, Victoria Falls and ultimately
southward to the Kruger National Park at a time in our past
when elephants were able to range with relative ease across
the timeless plains of Africa. Both subtle and compelling,
the story weaves in the arcane rhythm that pounds like a
tribal drum deep in Africa’s chest. Includes a 30-minutes
audio CD read by acclaimed South African actor John Whiteley.

The South African Bushveld-a field guide from the
Waterberg
(Lee Gutteridge) is the first comprehensive photographic
field guide to be published in South Africa that covers a
cross-section of the most prominent animals, reptiles,
plants, birds, insects and tracks and signs of a particular
region. It includes a detailed natural history section for a
greater understanding of the people, geology, habitats and
ecology of the Bushveld. This book negates the need to carry
more than one guide book when travelling to any South
African Bushveld region. In writing this guide Lee has
availed himself to the kind services of many experts who
have read and verified facts in their individual areas of
expertise. Some of these include: Vincent Carruthers
(amphibians), Louis du Preez (amphibians), Jonathan Leeming
(scorpions and spiders), Louis Liebenberg (tracking), Hendri
Coetzee (birds), Paul van Gaalen (birds), Jens Reissig
(reptiles), Johan Marais (reptile) and Frits van Oudtshoorn
(grasses).

From Fledgling to Eagle—The South African Air Force during
the Border War chronicles the evolution of the SAAF in the
‘Border War’ that raged in Angola and South West Africa
(Namibia) from 1966 to 1989, covering all the major South
African Defence Force (SADF) operations from Ongulumbashe in
1966 to the ‘April Fools’ Day war’ in 1989. Dick Lord, who
writes in a ‘from the cockpit’ style, has drawn on his own
first-hand operational reports and diaries, incorporating
anecdotes from dozens of aviators from a wide variety of
squadrons—Buccaneers, Impalas, Canberras, Mirages, Bosboks,
C-160s and -130s, Dakotas and helicopters. He also expands
on the close relationship the SAAF had with the ground
troops in a variety of operations—such units as the
Parabats, Recces, 32 Battalion, 61 Mech and Koevoet.

Vlamgat, literally ‘flaming hole’ in Afrikaans, was the
nickname the South African Air Force (SAAF) gave to the
Mirage F1, its formidable frontline jet fighter during South
Africa’s long ‘border wars’ in South West Africa (Namibia)
and Angola from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Battling
Soviet MiG-21s and -23s over African skies, the Vlammies,
the Mirage pilots as they were affectionately known,
acquitted themselves with distinction and honour.
Vlamgat—The story of the Mirage F1 in the South African Air
Force is a gripping account of these pilots and their deeds
of bravery; their experiences are authentically related with
accuracy, humour and pathos—by the author, himself a Vlammie. As Willem Hechter,
former Chief of the SAAF, says: "Vlamgat deserves a place of
pride in the long history of this, the second oldest air
force in the world."
