We just got back from our 11 day trip 3 days in Ohio, then 3 days in Chicago then we travelled around the north end of Lake Michigan hence the late report regarding the memorial. The Memorial Service went extremely well considering 1st time growing pains etc. Rich Byrne did a fantastic job in organizing. John Coey's mother Phyllis was speechless and teary eyed several times by everybody's effort, she wore quite the fancy RLI shirt. The one big regret of course was only 4 RLI vets made it, enough for a stick, apparently there were 4 cancellations the day before, Rich received 2 and Phyllis received 2, I don't know all the cancellee names. John Coey's gravesite was on a very steep hill thus sadly Keith Nelson was unable to walk up to be part of the wreath laying party but it was great to see him and Mary again after 30 years. Phyllis Coey was very pleased with the wreaths from RLIRA, RLI medical staff and SOF mag. Stephen Dwyers niece Emily brought a large memorial album about her Uncle. Phyllis had a large table of John's info. We had a very nice luncheon afterward with an RLI decorated cake for desert. An idea tossed in the air was that maybe next years service be in New Jersey by Joe Byrne's grave and perhaps Boston the following year by Stephen Dwyer's gravesite.
