Comments I was 8 troop 1978-9 and I believe was in one of the first contingents of Rhodesians to go to Bloemfontein for para training. It was not without its humour and arriving on a Sunday in an ageing DC7 we discovered to our horror that just about everywhere was closed except a Wimpy that sold wine. There was a minor incedent (by our standards) and the next day Sgt. Maj. Kieser (sp?) informed us that "You Rhodesias is animals, this is not the Coq d'Or in Salisbury 'ere". Just before we left we were made to move all our kit to the apron by the training hanger and spread it all out as a folding butt R1 had gone "missing" and "we are not blaming you but..." I was informed much later that it had made its way back to Salisbury and I'd really like to know how it was done! I am also looking to contact any of the old 8 troopers: Spence Higgs, Billy Metcalfe. Anyone know what happened to "old" Tom Brasson? Hey, he was old to us kids!

  Comments Hi Guys

This is just a quick note to say a big "Thank You" for today.

To see some of the "ouens" again from that very exiting period of my life is an honor and privilege.

I had a very enjoyable time, as did I'm sure the others, and my congratulations to the caterers. They did a splendid job.

Looking forward to seeing you on November 11.

Thanks once again, guys, it was great.

Best regards,

Jon Wrathall,

  Comments RLI Reunion 27 Oct

Chris hi, many years since I have spoken to you and thank you for your kind
invitation. Have just had a brief look at the website and "what a great site" - one of
those that you need peace and quite to read every line and every page, which I have every intention of doing. At present I am due to go into hospital either this weekend or early next week and thus regret to advise that I will be unable to attend the 27th
gathering -

The other must for me is to become a member of the revived association - you will be hearing from me shortly and will enroll on website.

Have a good function Saturday

Regards
Chris Donald

  Comments The Saints

Amazingly I managed to buy a copy of The Saints here in Harare yesterday! Thank you so much for putting it together, it was long overdue. Of course I have not read it yet but paging through I saw so many faces that I’d forgotten and spent a pleasant afternoon reliving the past and yes, I have to admit it, I was proud to be a part of it even though I paid a high price. I have no regrets. Thank you, and I am thoroughly looking forward to a good read (whilst others were watching the Rugby World Cup I was wandering through my past).

Comments A few weeks ago our son, farming in a remote part of Kenya, was attacked and severely beaten by three black men to the point of losing his life.

He was sound asleep in his cottage when he was startled awake after midnight by a torch being shone into his face. He rose to fight back, and was bashed on his back and sides by with a knobkerri. Then the third man struck him his back and head repeatedly with a blessedly blunt machete. Fortunately he managed to fight them off, stagger to the door leading into the garden, where he then stumbled to the neighbours and sought help. His assailants fled. He was then taken to hospital where he received 17 stiches to deep gouges on his arm and head.

During time spent recovering and on R and R, he mentioned to me that he wanted to go to Dubai to look for a job; and now we see the benefits of our RLI Association coming into play.

I immediately contacted Dr Cliff Webster - a past RLI Medical Officer who had once looked after our son when he was a toddler and who I knew, was working for Air Emirates. I asked if he could assist our son in starting a new life in Dubai. To cut a long story short, Cliff and his wife Fay, now have our son with them and have set up job interviews, briefed him on the do's and don'ts of living in a muslim country, and have provided him with a base while looking for a job and a home.

The Websters have been overwelmingly generous. To me, and I expect to all within the RLIRA, this sad but typical African story is a fine example of what our Association is about and how the camaraderie that we all once had, still exists today.

Please feel free to forward this to our members - as a practical illustration of how being in the RLIRA we can help each other in times of need and adversity. I believe that It is a fine example of our mission statement being fulfilled, because we can all help each other.

Comments 2 Commando -- "A Cut Above" - Confirmation Required

We had some quite-large wooden boards, with lettering under perspex, for the CSM to write out the guard rosters and other notices. "2 Commando -- A Cut Above" was at the top of each board. It was also under perspex on the wooden radio console in the ops vehicle.

I don't remember ever seeing it on a T-shirt, beer mug, etc.

Cheers
Sandy

Can anyone verify the term "A Cut Above" for 2 commando?

Comments Dear Chris,
Just a quick line to say we are back again in S.A. wiser and much poorer as a result of going to U.K. but very much richer in respect of the very moving service at Manorbier Chutrch at which the Rev.Victor Millgate paid tribute not only to our Dave but to all young men who have recently given their lives to their country with particular reference to Iraq and Afganistan. It gave us great pleasure to meet Shaun Ryan and his wife ( who were going on to your book launching later ) ,Dicky Tandy and Stephen from Eastbourne whose name I cannot remember. We very much appreciate the effort they all made in attending and are very indebted to you for making their attendance possible through your notice in the eCheetah. We had a very good lunch and Rhodesian-style party afterwards - could have been back at Ayrshire Club.

Many thanks again and all best wishes from Rosie and myself. Ian
