Comments Looking for DAVID & PETER MARSH I have been trying for many years to track down my long lost cousins who were once serving members in the RLI. Their names are David and Peter Marsh, sons of Harry and Fran Marsh of Bulawayo. Harry was the brother to my father Edgar Robert James Marsh. CommentsMr. Buttenshaw, I ran across your website on the RLI last year and I congratulate you on your very effective site. I came across it via some links to other Rhodesian military sites. I have had an interest in the Rhodesian military and the Bush War period beginning with the war years themselves. I was a bit young then, but since have progressed through a career in the United States Army (Infantry, Special Forces and Medical Corps) spanning currently 28 years. The bulk of my career has been in Special Operations and Army Special Forces and as such I have an abiding interest in counter-insurgency and counter-guerrilla operations. I have read everything I could get a copy of on the Rhodesian military and the Bush War – the most recent being The Saints (of which I wrote a book review for “Special Warfare” – the official journal of the US Army Special Warfare Center and School) and I just finished Charlie Warren’s book Stick Leader: RLI . I congratulate you on you efforts to build an abiding tribute to such a fine combat unit as the 1st Battalion, RLI. My rather odd question, as an amateur historian and collector, is: is there a forum or electronic “bulletin board” where I may post a message on the RLI site to the veteran members? I am in the process of collecting Rhodesian militaria and I am interested in field kit, webbing and like items. I have been collecting Rhodesian military uniforms since the early 1980’s, and I am interested in perhaps querying the RLI veterans, who would like their old kit to have a “respectable home” of a fellow soldier-collector if they are willing to sell any of the items they may be holding onto. I’ve corresponded with Chris Cocks who suggested some other militaria and collector sources – but Rhodesian kit is difficult to find. I thought that may be going closer to the troopies themselves, there might be those so inclined to sell some old kit to a fellow soldier. This may seem to forward a suggestion or something you’re not interested in – if you’re not interested or can’t help – just say so, I won’t be offended.

Thank you for your service and the great web-site.

Please know I have nothing but the deepest respect for the RLI and the valor of so fine a force.
 Best Regards,
Peter J. Benson, MD,
FACEP Lieutenant Colonel (Promotable),
Medical Corps Command Surgeon US Army Special Forces Command (Airborne)

Comments I joined the RLI in February 1961. Army number 2388, No 2 Platoon B Company. Company Commander was Major Essex Clark, 2 I/C was Captain Parker with Platoon Commanders Barret-Hamilton and Jimmy Smith Belton. The RSM was Ron Reid Daly. The CSM was "Crash" Hannaway, who I flew out with from Gatwick to New Sarum, then to KG V1 Barracks Salisbury and finally train to Bulawayo. Those I remenber were the Lloyd-Evans twins, good rugby players, Rodney Ackerman who told me his younger brother (Hylton)would play for the Sprigboks at cricket, and Johny Press from Joburg,Steve Jones, Scott Donaldson and a medic called Mike Strauss, and of course the Selous Scouts who also appered to nothing but spend time polishing the Ferrets.

The only excitement at the weekends was being called out to assist the BSAP as the locals got excited in the Beer Halls. We did of course get sent up to Northern Rhodesia Border during the Katanga crisis when we suffered our first casultie when an acidental discharge while cleaning the Bren Gun killed De Hass?. From there I went on the SAS selection course in the Matopas under the watchful eyes of Captain Peters later of Katanga fame and Sergeant Bob "Throat" Bouch.

From there it was to New Sarum for para training in January 1962, Ndola to the new barracks and in September to the School of Infantry on an OCTU. John Aust was on the preceeding course. Amongst those I remember were Colonel Noble, and Captain(s) Lever and Redfearn, and most of all RSM Tarr, who was possible the finest RSM I encountered in my later service in US Marines and the British Army.Does anyone remember Alistair Boyd Sutherland who was later Commissioned?. I see from the history that names I mention also are shown as being in A Company, I still have my pay book from Brady Barracks in 1961 which shows B Company and a platoon photograph with Serjeants Jacket and Loreans together with the CSM "Crash Hannaway".

Happy days now that my rheumatic bones protest too much. Whatever happened to the regimental Cheetahs and the Field Guns outside the Regimental HQ?.

Comments New Book - I'm No Hero

At my last company sales conference (January 2008 in Mexico) we had a guest speaker - a Capt. Charlie Plumb - in his 80's who was a fighter pilot in Vietnam and shot down and in Hanoi Hilton prison for 6 years and survived. Phenomenal story.

If you want to buy the book (I'm No Hero) you can order it on:- www.charlieplumb.com It is a fantastic read about survival and how cruel the bloody Vietcong were - and how these guys survived in 8 ft. x 8 ft. cells by putting their minds away onto another plane over and above extreme torture and deprivation - makes our little war look stupid!.

This is a book that would sell very well in my opinion on your RLI web. Charlie still flies and has given over 4,000 speeches/presentations to date. He is an absolute inspiration - a humble man - a Christian - and he just blows people away.

If you endorse this request for his book on your web - I will let Charlie know - the guy is wealthy - he is not in it for the money - what he charges for his speeches is expected - just passing on the knowledge. So out of hardship he capitalized without planning it to be so.

He and I have been in touch as I told him about RLI and he signed my book from him.

Comments I tried my hand at a little Rho Poetry a while back ..... not spectacular, but I thought I'd share it with people that it might mean as much to as me. Rhodesia was never a country, Rhodesia can never die The beautiful land on which She was built, could never bind or tie While the ones who loved Her still have our hearts and souls Rhodesia the brave, the memory, never will She grow old. The loved ones and the friends we lost, the brave, the bold, the free Have added to Her spirit true, and as we die shall we Rhodesia, She will never leave, Rhodesia, always there Our faithful strong Rhodesia, She is beyond compare She has always been a part of us, and we a part of Her We cannot be torn asunder by politician or by terr They can drag us, drive us, pull us down, but one thing holds so true, I'm Rhodesian and won't stay down for long, and nor my friends will you Place your foot upon the ground, wherever you may stand Rhodesia is beneath your feet, in your heart and in your hands Our time will come again my friends, it will not pass us by And while one Rhodesian remembers Her, Rhodesia cannot die

CommentsI would be grateful if someone would give me the proper email adres of Mr Rex Harding who apparantly served in the RLI (1st commando) and is now in the UK. I used to stay on a farm in Nothern Rhodesia near Broken Hill and according to the local farming community (Tompson, Hunt) Mr Harding used to own that farm in "the old days". It seems he left his farm and opened a butchery in South Rhodesia.
Many thanks,

 Comments GUNFIRE

Christmas morning 1969; I was a trooper in 14 Troop, 3 Commando, 1RLI.
07hrs00 found me joining a handful of fellow homeless soldiers in the quadrangle of the commando lines.
We had been instructed to ‘fall in’ with our canteens.
We must have presented a motley site, nervously standing to attention in our green PT shorts and vests.
Before us, Captain Ronald Francis Reid-Daly, O.C Base Group, stood rigidly in full camouflage uniform next to a steaming tea earn. His features softened and he wished us a Merry Christmas. Assisted by Corporal May, the commando medic, he poured into each of our canteens a ration of hot tea laced with scotch whiskey. It was my first introduction to the RLI tradition of Officers serving other ranks who remained in barracks on Christmas morning ‘GUNFIRE’!

Later, upon being commissioned, the importance of upholding Regimental traditions was instilled in me by Jeremy Treadwell Strong, my course officer.

Each and every year thereafter, without exception, I have commenced Christmas morning with a cup of ‘GUNFIRE’. On this Christmas morning I shall do the same.

I wish each and every one of you, and your families, a joyous and festive Christmas; and for olde time’s sake, I invite you to join me in a steaming mug of ‘GUNFIRE’ this Christmas morn, and a toast to the olde Regiment, and the olde soldiers already departed.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Comments This has been a successful year for the association from the relaunch through to the highly successful launch of "The Saints" in London. I would like to express my appreciation to all those who, on the members behalf, have put in so much personal effort to return the unit to where it needs to be. I personally have enjoyed the opportunity to meet up with the ouens at the functions again, the passing time does not erode the personal pride I feel at having served with this fine unit and the men who served in it. To all the members of the committiees well done and best wishes for the year ahead and to all ex unit members and their families best wishes for Xmas and 2008. Regards Phil ex 3Cdo 12 Trp

 Comments RLI Reunion 27 Oct

Chris hi, many years since I have spoken to you and thank you for your kind
invitation. Have just had a brief look at the website and "what a great site" - one of
those that you need peace and quite to read every line and every page, which I have every intention of doing. At present I am due to go into hospital either this weekend or early next week and thus regret to advise that I will be unable to attend the 27th
gathering -

The other must for me is to become a member of the revived association - you will be hearing from me shortly and will enroll on website.

Have a good function Saturday

 CommentsThe Saints

Amazingly I managed to buy a copy of The Saints here in Harare yesterday! Thank you so much for putting it together, it was long overdue. Of course I have not read it yet but paging through I saw so many faces that I’d forgotten and spent a pleasant afternoon reliving the past and yes, I have to admit it, I was proud to be a part of it even though I paid a high price. I have no regrets. Thank you, and I am thoroughly looking forward to a good read (whilst others were watching the Rugby World Cup I was wandering through my past).

CommentsA few weeks ago our son, farming in a remote part of Kenya, was attacked and severely beaten by three black men to the point of losing his life.

He was sound asleep in his cottage when he was startled awake after midnight by a torch being shone into his face. He rose to fight back, and was bashed on his back and sides by with a knobkerri. Then the third man struck him his back and head repeatedly with a blessedly blunt machete. Fortunately he managed to fight them off, stagger to the door leading into the garden, where he then stumbled to the neighbours and sought help. His assailants fled. He was then taken to hospital where he received 17 stiches to deep gouges on his arm and head.

During time spent recovering and on R and R, he mentioned to me that he wanted to go to Dubai to look for a job; and now we see the benefits of our RLI Association coming into play.

I immediately contacted Dr Cliff Webster - a past RLI Medical Officer who had once looked after our son when he was a toddler and who I knew, was working for Air Emirates. I asked if he could assist our son in starting a new life in Dubai. To cut a long story short, Cliff and his wife Fay, now have our son with them and have set up job interviews, briefed him on the do's and don'ts of living in a muslim country, and have provided him with a base while looking for a job and a home.

The Websters have been overwelmingly generous. To me, and I expect to all within the RLIRA, this sad but typical African story is a fine example of what our Association is about and how the camaraderie that we all once had, still exists today.

Please feel free to forward this to our members - as a practical illustration of how being in the RLIRA we can help each other in times of need and adversity. I believe that It is a fine example of our mission statement being fulfilled, because we can all help each other.

Jerry Strong

Comments 2 Commando -- "A Cut Above" - Confirmation Required

We had some quite-large wooden boards, with lettering under perspex, for the CSM to write out the guard rosters and other notices. "2 Commando -- A Cut Above" was at the top of each board. It was also under perspex on the wooden radio console in the ops vehicle.

I don't remember ever seeing it on a T-shirt, beer mug, etc.

Cheers
Sandy

Can anyone verify the term "A Cut Above" for 2 commando?

Comments Dear Chris,
Just a quick line to say we are back again in S.A. wiser and much poorer as a result of going to U.K. but very much richer in respect of the very moving service at Manorbier Chutrch at which the Rev.Victor Millgate paid tribute not only to our Dave but to all young men who have recently given their lives to their country with particular reference to Iraq and Afganistan. It gave us great pleasure to meet Shaun Ryan and his wife ( who were going on to your book launching later ) ,Dicky Tandy and Stephen from Eastbourne whose name I cannot remember. We very much appreciate the effort they all made in attending and are very indebted to you for making their attendance possible through your notice in the eCheetah. We had a very good lunch and Rhodesian-style party afterwards - could have been back at Ayrshire Club.

Many thanks again and all best wishes from Rosie and myself. Ian

Comments The superb and spectacular launch of The Saints.

My Dear Steve,

When we first met briefly while strolling across the quadrangle between the Guards' Museum and Chapel, I said I would let you know what I thought of the launch of 'The Saints' after it was all over. Well, after it was over, very few could find whom they wanted to meet, as we all became frenetically involved in book signing, meeting new friends and renewing old friendships, imbibing smoothly and munching an abundance of tasty delights The only quiet place for a chat would have been sacrilegiously sitting in a pew in the Guards' Chapel and then being correctly but embarrassingly turfed out by that splendidly forceful Guards Chaplain. Mind you the chapel provided a most emotive moment when viewing the two sets of our Colours. I had never seen the Presidential or new regimental Colours before then.

The launch was an unmitigated and brilliant success. It was warmly emotive, pleasantly English, and the setting could not have been more appropriate. I hope it was also financially successful for Chris and Kerrin Cocks and their Thirty Degrees South Publishing business because they put so much of themselves and their lives into the book

I felt awkward being first 'cab of the rank' in my overly serious address to our 'congregation' but some-one had to do it. I thought Alex Binda, Kerrin Cocks, and Lord Salisbury said just the right things to warm and interest the atmosphere. I must admit some slight astonishment when the Guards Chapel Padre decided to make an impromptu statement and lead us in prayer: describing the relationship between the Guards and Southern Africa; and ending with 'The Lord's Prayer', but I was quickly put at ease with his sincerity, clarity, and style. He added a fine ending to our addresses. Of Course the regimental band of the Scots Guards were magnificent with 'Sarie Marais' that I have sung using my banjo at many a braaivleis in Southern Africa; and 'The Saints Go Marching In' followed by the haunting strains of 'The last Post'; all making the hair on the back of my neck crackle. It was a perfect finale for a day that had started militarily for Susan and I with watching the colourful and nostalgically musical 'Changing of the Guard' at the Palace in brilliant sunshine.

I believe that the book and the DVD accompanying the book are also superb, and well matched by the the occasion.

Therefore Steve, once again, you are most heartily and warmly congratulated for organizing a splendid and memorable event that I'm sure all attending will never forget. You will have to let me know how you kept the rain at bay! Mind you it seems to be belting down in the midlands of the UK at the moment. We Australians all wish it were raining here instead!

Yours sincerely,
John Essex-Clark

Comments On behalf of the Australian Chapter of the Rhodesian Light Infantry Regimental Association, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and associates of Tom van Rensburg on their untimely loss. As quoted from a source in SA - 17/06/2007

Tomorrow we are attending Tom van Rensburg's funeral here in our home village of Bathurst. You might like to notify your Rhodie Association, Tom was an early RLI stalwart from about 1962. He was the senior Drill & Weapons Insructor at School of Infantry in Gwelo for many many years and finished as a WOI at war's end, still at School of Inf. Anyone who went there for a Drill & Weapons Course will remember Tom 'Spook' van Rensburg. He was a one man building contractor here in Bathurst, and had been a builder since our war ended. Last Wednesday he was on his way to Johannesburg with all five of his black builders (all of them good ex Bulawayo Matabele's), to renew their work permits for South Africa. We think he fell asleep at the wheel, but just north of Bloemfontein, he left the road and rolled his vehicle, killing himself and all five of his builders. The business was effectively wiped out. All in all, pretty damn tragic, Tom was 68 but very active

Comments Hi Chris,

My dad was under 'Uncle Ron's' command in Support Group with Charlie Krause, Willie Van der Riet, Bandy Eemerick, Vance Meyers, Paul Holdt and Frank Ricardo etc. I don't think I've seen or heard about them for several years.

Actually I just found the Group photo from March 1973 on your website and my Father's name is there but was absent the day of the photo. I was so annoyed because I have looked for a photo of him in his army uniform all my life but have never been able to find one. All the photos and kit was stolen from our house a long time ago and I've never been able to find replacements. That was the closest I been to finding one. His name was TJ Matthews (Sgt)Trevor James. Service from 1966 - 1973 Mortar section

My other Uncles were CJ Matthews (Cecil John) WO2 Originally 3 commando then base group Driver and Maintenance. Service 1966 - 1987. Basil Matthews (Service in the early 70's also base group. Was apparently a dynamite boxer in the army. My uncle whom I think you may know as his service was around the same time as yours was Keith Matthews 3 Commando RLI service '74 to '75. My other two uncles were there from inception I think to about 1965.

Great job you are doing keeping the spirit alive. It is about time a history was written on the RLI and love the website. Was too young to me in the army but still Proudly Rhodesian. Used to enjoy all the Rhodesian parties and the stories.

Trevor Matthews

Mr. Buttenshaw,

I ran across your website on the RLI last year and I congratulate you on your very effective site.
